Frank Gehry, Frank Owen Gehry
Frank O. Gehry (1929–2025) was a Canadian and American architect and designer whose experimental work connected architecture with the visual-art culture of Los Angeles. After completing architecture studies at the University of Southern California in 1954, he established his own practice in Los Angeles in 1962. His early relationships with artists including Edward Kienholz, Robert Irwin, and Ed Ruscha helped situate his work within an avant-garde creative context. Collectors also know Gehry through the Easy Edges furniture line, whose corrugated-cardboard and fiberboard forms brought him national attention. The reconstruction of his Santa Monica residence, begun in 1978, developed an additive, collage-like language using ordinary construction materials. MoMA subsequently included his work in its 1988 Deconstructivist Architecture exhibition. Across buildings, furniture, sketches, and design objects, Gehry pursued movement and sculptural form, making his name relevant to architecture collections as well as decorative-art and fine-art markets.

Common works and media
Collectors may encounter Gehry through design objects and architecture-related material rather than through a single fine-art medium. MoMA documents Easy Edges chairs and a rocker made from corrugated cardboard and fiberboard, while the official practice site presents preliminary architectural sketches and a digital-model-based design process. Appraisily's matched auction categories also include works on paper and prints, sculpture and mixed media, decorative art and editions, and fine art or paintings. Cataloguing should distinguish original drawings from manufactured furniture, editioned objects, prints, and reproductions, with materials, dimensions, dates, inscriptions, and edition markings recorded carefully.
Market and appraisal context
Gehry auction results should be compared within object type. A chair, architectural drawing, editioned design object, mixed-media work, and painting should not share one undifferentiated benchmark. Appraisily's matched records support evaluating medium, size, date, career period, condition, restoration, signature or inscriptions, edition details, attribution confidence, provenance, exhibition history, catalogue references, subject, rarity, and recent comparable sales. Reported auction totals may treat premiums or fees differently, while private sales and incomplete feeds remain outside some datasets. A defensible appraisal therefore begins with close comparables and confirms authorship, maker or manufacturer, edition status, condition, and provenance before interpreting realized prices.
