About Colin Lanceley

Colin Lanceley (1938–2015) was an Australian painter, sculptor, printmaker, and draughtsman best known for his large-scale three-dimensional paintings that pushed the boundaries between painting and sculpture. Born in Dunedin, New Zealand, he spent his career in Australia and became a significant figure in the post-war Australian art scene. Lanceley's work is held in major international public collections, including the Tate in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra, and the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney. Beyond his studio practice, he played an active institutional role as the inaugural chair of the advisory board of the National Art School in Sydney and as a board member of the National Gallery of Australia. He died in Sydney on 30 January 2015.

Common works and media

Collectors and appraisers most commonly encounter Lanceley's work as large three-dimensional relief paintings that incorporate sculptural elements, as well as freestanding sculptures, limited-edition prints, and works on paper. His paintings often feature bold colour and mixed-media construction. Print editions, drawings, and smaller-scale works also circulate in the secondary market and at auction.

Market and appraisal context

Colin Lanceley's work appears across auction categories including Australian art, post-war and contemporary art, and prints and multiples. His three-dimensional paintings and sculptures are the most distinctive part of his output and tend to be the most sought-after at auction, while his prints and drawings provide an accessible entry point for collectors. Institutional holdings at Tate, MoMA, and major Australian galleries reinforce his market standing. When evaluating a Lanceley work, appraisers should consider the specific medium, scale, provenance, exhibition history, condition, and comparable public auction results for similar works from the same period.
