Dame Barbara Rae is a Scottish painter and printmaker born in Stirling in 1943. She studied at Edinburgh School of Art from 1961 to 1965 before embarking on a career that has established her as one of Scotland's most respected contemporary artists. Rae later taught at the Glasgow School of Art and was a visiting instructor at the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore in 1984. She is a member of both the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Academy of Arts, and was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her services to art.
