About Anton Mauve
Anton Mauve (1838–1888), born Anthonij Rudolf Mauve, was a Dutch painter recognized as one of the leading figures of the Hague School. Working in a realist tradition, Mauve became celebrated for his atmospheric depictions of the Dutch countryside — especially pastoral scenes of sheep grazing on the heathland near the village of Laren, where he settled later in life. A master colorist with a restrained, tonal palette, he helped define the Hague School's distinctive approach to landscape. Mauve is also remembered for his formative influence on his cousin-in-law Vincent van Gogh, who admired his technique and sought his guidance in the early 1880s. His paintings, signed 'A. Mauve' or with the monogram 'A.M.', are held in major museum collections including the Rijksmuseum, the Mesdag Collection, MoMA, and Tate. He died in 1888 at the age of forty-nine.
