About Andre Franquin
André Franquin (1924–1997) was a Belgian comics artist and illustrator widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Franco-Belgian bande dessinée. Born in Etterbeek, a suburb of Brussels, he trained at the Atelier Sint Lucas before joining the editorial team of the journal Spirou in the mid-1940s. From 1946 to 1968 he drew the Spirou et Fantasio adventure series, a period widely considered the strip's golden age. He went on to create two of European comics' most enduring characters: the accident-prone office worker Gaston (Gaston Lagaffe) and the exuberant fictional marsupial Marsupilami. Later in his career he also produced Idées Noires, a series of darkly satirical single-panel cartoons. His expressive linework, inventive visual gags, and detailed backgrounds set new standards for European comic art and continue to influence cartoonists worldwide. Collectors most often encounter his work as original ink artwork pages, printed album editions, and licensed merchandise.

Common works and media
Franquin's work most commonly appears in appraisal and auction contexts as original ink (and occasionally watercolor or gouache) comic strip pages and panels, primarily from Spirou et Fantasio, Gaston, and standalone Marsupilami stories. Printed album editions in multiple languages, lithographic reproductions, poster art, and licensed character merchandise also circulate. Original cover illustrations and promotional drawings are especially rare and highly valued.
Market and appraisal context
Original comic artwork by Franquin is relatively scarce, as much of his output was created for serial magazine publication under work-for-hire arrangements. Surviving original ink (and sometimes watercolor or gouache) pages—especially from the Spirou et Fantasio period or early Gaston strips—are the most sought-after lots at specialized comic-art auctions. Factors affecting appraisal include the specific series, whether the page features the Marsupilami or other signature characters, overall condition, and documented provenance. Published editions, lithographic prints, and licensed merchandise form a more accessible collecting segment. Collectors should note that reproduction prints and facsimile pages circulate alongside originals; authentication by a Franco-Belgian comic art specialist is advisable.
