How to identify antique rings

An antique ring is identified by the full object, not one stamp. Marks, metal, stone cut, setting style, wear, and construction all need to line up.

Quick identification checklist

  • Look inside the band for karat, sterling, platinum, maker, country, patent, or assay marks.
  • Check the setting: Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, retro, and revival rings use different construction clues.
  • Photograph the stone cut, prongs, gallery, shoulders, shank, sizing marks, repairs, and wear.
  • Separate age clues from value clues. A ring can be old but modest, or newer and valuable.

What matters most

Metal content, natural or treated stones, stone size, setting quality, maker, period style, condition, provenance, and demand all matter. A date, inscription, or worn mark helps, but it does not confirm authenticity or value without the rest of the object.

FAQ

Can photos prove a ring is antique?

Photos can show strong clues, but they cannot prove every material, treatment, or repair.

Are all antique rings handmade?

No. Some are handmade, some are partly machine-made, and some later rings copy older styles.

Should I clean an antique ring first?

Do not aggressively clean it. Photograph it as found, especially if stones are loose or settings are fragile.
