About Zinaida Evgen'evna Serebrjakova
Zinaida Yevgenyevna Serebryakova (1884–1967) was a Russian-born painter who spent much of her working life in France. Born on the Neskucnoe estate in Russia, she came from the distinguished Benois-Lanceray artistic dynasty: her uncle was the painter Alexander Benois, a leading figure in Russian art, and her brother was the artist Evgeni Lansere. Serebryakova trained in Saint Petersburg and Paris, developing a style that combined rigorous academic draftsmanship with Modernist influences. She became known for luminous portraits, self-portraits, domestic interiors, and figure compositions. She worked across oil, pastel, watercolor, and gouache, and also produced book illustrations and large-scale decorative mural commissions. After leaving Russia in 1924, she settled permanently in Paris, where she continued painting until her death. Serebryakova is widely regarded as one of the most significant Russian women painters of the twentieth century.

Common works and media
Serebryakova worked most often in oil on canvas, pastel on paper, watercolor, and gouache. Her most recognizable subjects include portraits and self-portraits, domestic interior scenes, female figure studies, children and family groups, and landscapes. She also produced large-format mural and decorative wall paintings, as well as book illustrations and theatrical design work. Works range from small preparatory sketches and studies to full-scale canvas paintings.
Market and appraisal context
With 262 auction lots recorded in the Appraisily database, Serebryakova's work appears regularly on the international art market. Her oil paintings—particularly portraits, figure studies, and domestic interior scenes—tend to be the most sought-after at auction. Pastels, watercolors, and gouaches also trade, typically at lower price points than oils. Provenance linking works to her Russian period or to documented exhibition history can influence valuation. Attribution should be verified carefully, given the range of name transliterations and the possibility of misattribution in the secondary market. Medium, size, date, subject matter, condition, and catalogue raisonné inclusion are standard appraisal factors.

Appraisal caveats
- Attribution should be verified carefully; Serebryakova's name variants and transliterations (Serebriakova, Serebrjakova, Lansere, Lanceray) can complicate catalogue searches
- 262 recorded auction lots in the Appraisily database suggest active but not high-volume market presence
