About Walter Dahn
Walter Dahn (1954–2024) was a German painter, photographer, sculptor, and sound artist recognized as one of the leading figures of the Neue Wilde (Junge Wilde) movement that reshaped German art in the 1980s. Born in Tönisvorst, North Rhine-Westphalia, he settled in Cologne in 1976 and joined the influential Mülheimer Freiheit artist group alongside peers such as Hans Peter Adamski and Jiří Georg Dokoupil. Dahn's work spans painting, photography, assemblage, printmaking, and sound, unified by an expressive, figurative approach that rejected the conceptual minimalism dominant in preceding decades. He taught at the Düsseldorf Art Academy (1983–84) and served as professor of painting at the Braunschweig University of Art from 1995. His work is held in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, among other institutions.

Common works and media
Collectors are most likely to encounter Dahn's expressive figurative paintings on canvas and wood panel, as well as gouaches, works on paper, prints (including screen prints and lithographs), photographs, sculptural assemblages, and mixed-media pieces. His imagery often features raw, gestural brushwork with figurative and symbolic motifs characteristic of the Neue Wilde. Photographic works and editioned prints provide a more accessible entry point, while large-scale paintings from the 1980s represent the core of his auction presence.
Market and appraisal context
Walter Dahn's works appear regularly at auction across several categories, including Post-War and Contemporary Art, Contemporary Prints and Multiples, and Photographs. With over 360 works documented in auction databases, collectors encounter a range of media — from paintings and gouaches to photographs, prints, and assemblages. Works from his Mülheimer Freiheit and early Neue Wilde period (1979–mid-1980s) are often considered the most historically significant. As with many artists of this generation, provenance, condition, medium, date, and exhibition history are key factors in appraisal. Collectors should verify attribution and edition details for prints and photographs and review comparable public auction results for current market context.

Appraisal caveats
- The source pack does not include specific auction-house records or realized prices; market value ranges cannot be established from available sources alone.
- Collectors should consult recent auction results from major houses for current pricing context.
- Dahn worked across many mediums — a work's category (painting vs. photograph vs. print) can meaningfully affect its market position.
