About Utagawa Sadahide

Utagawa Sadahide (1807–1873), born Hashimoto Sadahide, was a Japanese woodblock print artist and painter of the Utagawa school, one of the principal lineages of the ukiyo-e tradition. Also known by the art name Gountei Sadahide, he produced prints across a wide variety of genres but is best remembered for his Yokohama-e — vivid depictions of foreigners, their customs, and the bustling international port of Yokohama during the 1860s. These works made him a best-selling artist in that decade, as Japan's opening to foreign trade created intense public curiosity about the outside world. His reputation extended internationally: the Tokugawa shogunate selected his work for display at the 1867 International Exposition in Paris.
