About Theodoros Stamos
Theodoros Stamos (1922–1997) was a Greek American painter and a founding member of the Abstract Expressionist movement in New York. Born on Manhattan's Lower East Side to Greek immigrant parents, Stamos became one of the youngest artists in the legendary Irascibles group—the circle of painters whose protest against the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1950 helped define the postwar American avant-garde. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Tate in London, among other institutions. Throughout his career Stamos maintained strong ties to Greece, dividing his later life between Manhattan and the island of Lefkada. He died in Ioannina, Greece, in 1997. Collectors encounter Stamos's work at major Post-War and Contemporary Art sales, where his paintings are valued for their place within the first generation of American Abstract Expressionism.

Common works and media
Stamos worked primarily in oil on canvas and works on paper. Collectors most frequently encounter his abstract paintings, which range from intimate cabinet-sized canvases to large-scale works. He also produced drawings and prints. Works are typically unsigned or signed in ways consistent with his period; professional authentication and provenance documentation are recommended for appraisal purposes.
Market and appraisal context
Theodoros Stamos's work appears at auction in Post-War and Contemporary Art and American Art categories. Key factors that can influence appraisal include the painting's date and period, size, medium, provenance, exhibition history, and condition. Works with documented museum exhibition records or strong provenance linking them to major collections tend to carry additional significance. Stamos's position as one of the original Irascibles places him within an important historical cohort, which can affect collector interest. Specific realized prices are not available in this source pack; comparable public auction results should be consulted for individual appraisal.

Appraisal caveats
- The source pack does not include specific auction records or realized prices; individual work values vary widely based on medium, size, period, provenance, and condition.
- RKD records a possible alternate birth year of 1932 alongside the accepted 1922 date; the 1922 date is corroborated by the Library of Congress and the New York Times obituary.
