About Tadeusz Kantor
Tadeusz Kantor (1915–1990) was a Polish painter, assemblage artist, theatre director, set designer, and art theorist whose career spanned more than five decades. Born in Wielopole Skrzyńskie, he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków from 1933 to 1939 and remained professionally active in Kraków from the mid-1950s until his death. Kantor is best known for his pioneering experimental theatre work, including Happenings and the influential Cricot 2 theatre company, which fused visual art with live performance. His creative output encompassed painting, assemblage, graphic design, drawing, and stage design, often incorporating found objects and exploring themes of memory, death, and the absurd. He received the Witkacy Prize from the Critics' Circle in 1989. Kantor's interdisciplinary practice has secured his place as one of the most significant figures in post-war European art.

Common works and media
Common works include oil and acrylic paintings, watercolors and ink drawings, mixed-media assemblages incorporating found objects, prints and graphic works, theatrical set designs and stage sketches, and posters related to Cricot 2 performances. Subjects range from abstract compositions to figurative works addressing ritual, memory, and mortality. Later works often reference his concept of a "theatre of death." Collectors may also encounter exhibition catalogs, artist books, and ephemera tied to his theatrical productions.
Market and appraisal context
Tadeusz Kantor's work appears regularly in international auction markets, with over 260 recorded lots. Collectors most frequently encounter his paintings, works on paper, assemblages, and prints. Theatrical drawings and set-design sketches also circulate at auction. Provenance linked to Kantor's Kraków circle or to Cricot 2 collaborators can strengthen a work's market standing. Appraisal should account for medium, date of execution, dimensions, condition, exhibition history, and catalogue documentation. Kantor's dual recognition in visual-art and theatre-history contexts means that institutional and scholarly interest can influence demand across categories.
