Stanley William Hayter (1901–1988) was a British painter, draughtsman and printmaker whose career was centered on the possibilities of experimental graphic art. After studying chemistry and geology and working in the oil industry, he moved to Paris and learned engraving. In 1927 he established the workshop that became Atelier 17, an influential setting for artists exploring new approaches to printmaking. Hayter's own work moved through an abstract strand of Surrealism and, from the 1940s, an association with abstract expressionism. His practice included engraving, etching, lithography, painting and drawing, often emphasizing texture, color and inventive abstract form. He also wrote important technical books on gravure and prints.
