About Rodolphe Théophile Bosshard

Rodolphe Théophile Bosshard (1889–1960) was a Swiss painter, graphic artist, and draftsman born in Morges in the canton of Vaud. Active during the first half of the twentieth century, Bosshard worked across painting, drawing, printmaking, and decorative art, with a noted focus on the nude figure. His career is documented by several major institutions: the Library of Congress, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, VIAF, and the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History all maintain authority records for him, and The Museum of Modern Art in New York holds examples of his work. Bosshard died in Chardonne, Switzerland, in 1960. He also taught, numbering the artist Henry-Emmanuel Durand among his students. His oeuvre is represented in at least 109 images catalogued by the RKD, and a posthumous monograph—R. Th. Bosshard, peintures, dessins, poèmes & textes—was published in 1962.

Common works and media

Bosshard produced oil paintings on canvas and panel, drawings in various media, and graphic prints. The nude figure is a documented subject in his output. Works range from studies and smaller compositions on paper to larger finished canvases. His practice also included decorative work. Collectors should expect to see both signed and unsigned works at auction, and attribution may benefit from comparison with the 109 images catalogued by the RKD.

Appraisal caveats

  • No specific movement affiliation found in the available source material; attribution to a named school or movement should not be assumed without further scholarly confirmation.
  • Market data from 454 auction records in the Appraisily database indicates regular auction presence, but realized-price analysis is outside the scope of this identity profile.
  • The Getty ULAN record (500031227) timed out during collection and could not be consulted for additional biographical detail.
