About Rodolfo Nieto

Rodolfo Nieto Labastida (1936–1985) was a Mexican painter, lithographer, and graphic artist associated with the Oaxacan School, a regional movement rooted in the cultural traditions of Oaxaca, Mexico. Born on July 13, 1936, he trained at art school beginning in 1954 under the painter and draftsman Carlos Orozco Romero and served as a student and assistant to Diego Rivera, one of Mexico's most celebrated muralists. Nieto's practice spanned painting, printmaking, and graphic work, contributing to the rich tradition of modern Mexican art during the second half of the twentieth century. His work is held in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Nieto died on June 24, 1985.

Subject matter draws from the visual language of the Oaxacan School and modern Mexican painting traditions.

Market and appraisal context

Rodolfo Nieto's work appears in the Latin American art market, particularly in categories of modern Mexican painting, works on paper, and prints. Factors relevant to appraisal include the medium (oil versus works on paper or lithographic editions), provenance linking to established galleries or exhibitions, condition, and the significance of his connection to the Oaxacan School and Diego Rivera. Collectors should verify attribution through documented provenance. Specific auction records were not available in the collected sources, so a professional appraisal is recommended for accurate valuation.

Appraisal caveats

  • Market evidence from the source pack is limited; no specific auction records or price references were available in the collected sources
  • Death date conflict exists between VIAF (1980) and Wikidata/RKD (1985); the RKD date with full day-month-year is used as the stronger version
