Nationality

British

Philip Sutton (born 1928) is a British painter, printmaker and teacher whose career extends from postwar London into the twenty-first century. Born in Poole and raised in London’s East End, he studied at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1948 to 1953 and taught there from 1954 to 1963. His first solo exhibition followed in 1956, and recognition at the John Moores Liverpool Exhibition helped establish his public profile. Sutton became an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1977 and a full member in 1989. His work is associated with vivid colour and direct observation, with landscapes, flowers and people recurring across his practice. Travel in Australia and Fiji, followed by sustained work in Pembrokeshire and Manorbier, broadened the settings of his painting. Collectors may encounter not only paintings but also drawings, woodcuts, ceramics and occasional design work, reflecting an unusually varied studio practice.

Common works and media

Collectors most commonly encounter Sutton through colourful paintings, particularly landscapes and figure or flower subjects. His broader practice also includes drawings, woodcuts, ceramics and tapestry designs. The documented woodcuts date from 1962 to 1976, while later painting is closely connected with Pembrokeshire and Manorbier. Each category should be identified accurately before selecting auction comparables because materials, format and production context differ substantially.

Market and appraisal context

Sutton’s market spans several kinds of work, so comparisons should remain within the same medium and category: a painting, drawing, woodcut and ceramic should not be treated as interchangeable. Date and connection to a documented body of work can refine the comparison, including woodcuts made from 1962 to 1976 and paintings associated with Pembrokeshire and Manorbier. Subject and scale may narrow the search further because published sources identify landscapes, flowers, people and large-format paintings. Appraisily’s directory indicates meaningful auction coverage, but this source pack contains no item-level realized prices, dimensions, condition reports, provenance histories or edition statements. Those details require verification from the object and the relevant sale catalogue before a valuation conclusion is reached.

Value drivers

  1. Medium and work type should be matched closely when selecting comparables because Sutton worked across paintings, drawings, woodcuts, ceramics and design projects
  2. Date and relationship to a documented body of work can refine comparable selection, including the 1962–1976 woodcuts and paintings associated with Pembrokeshire and Manorbier
  3. Subject and scale can help distinguish relevant comparables because published overviews identify landscapes, flowers and people and describe large, strongly coloured paintings
  4. Comparable public auction records should be filtered by medium, subject and sale date before drawing valuation conclusions

Appraisal caveats

  • The source pack contains an Appraisily auction-directory signal but no individual realized prices or major-auction-house lot records.
  • The supplied count of 372 directory records is not evidence of a price trend, authenticity or market direction.
  • Object-specific dimensions, condition, provenance, signatures and edition information are not documented in this source pack and require separate examination.
  • The VIAF page combines labels associated with a British artist and a translator, so its translator bibliography should not be treated as evidence about this artist.
