About Otto Eglau

Otto Eglau (1917–1988) was a German painter, watercolorist, graphic artist, and etcher born in Karlshorst, Berlin. He studied at the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin and went on to build a versatile practice spanning painting, printmaking, and drawing. Beginning in 1951, Eglau undertook extensive travels across southern Europe, North Africa, and East Asia—including Spain, Greece, Portugal, Tunisia, Sweden, and Japan—which informed his pictorial subjects. His work is represented in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Eglau died in Kampen on the island of Sylt in 1988.

Common works and media

Eglau produced works across several media. Collectors may encounter etchings and other intaglio prints, watercolors, oil or acrylic paintings on canvas or panel, and drawings in ink or graphite. His travel-influenced subject matter often includes landscape and coastal scenes. Editioned prints, when present, should be checked for edition size, plate signature, and paper type.

Market and appraisal context

Otto Eglau's works appear at auction primarily as prints, watercolors, and paintings. Collectors encountering his pieces should note the range of media he employed—etchings, watercolors, and graphic works—which can affect appraisal value differently. Provenance, condition, date of execution, and subject matter are key factors. Attribution may benefit from his documented presence in institutional collections such as MoMA. As with many mid-twentieth-century German artists without a published catalogue raisonné, verifying authenticity against known examples is advisable before valuation.

Auction categories and appraisal factors

Value drivers

  1. Medium is a key differentiator: etchings, watercolors, and paintings may carry different market values
  2. Works held in the Museum of Modern Art collection may support attribution credibility
  3. Subject matter, date, condition, provenance, and edition size (for prints) are relevant appraisal factors

Appraisal caveats

  • No detailed exhibition history, gallery representation, or catalogue raisonné was available in the source pack; attribution should be confirmed against documented works.
  • The artist's market profile appears modest; comparable auction records should be reviewed when available.
