About Onorato Carlandi

Onorato Carlandi (1848–1939) was an Italian painter and watercolorist celebrated for his luminous views of Rome, the surrounding Roman Campagna, and the British countryside. Born in Rome, he trained at the Accademia di San Luca under Alessandro Capalti and Francesco Coghetti before moving to Naples to study with Domenico Morelli at the Accademia di Belle Arti, where he absorbed the realist currents shaping southern Italian painting in the late nineteenth century. From 1880 he traveled to London annually, producing watercolors of English landscapes that found an enthusiastic audience among British collectors. He married the Irish painter Lina Haverty in 1902. Carlandi remained active in Rome for nearly seven decades, and his works capture a vanishing pastoral and urban Italy at the turn of the twentieth century.

Common works and media

Carlandi is best known for watercolors depicting Roman cityscapes, ancient ruins, the Roman Campagna, and pastoral Italian landscapes. He also produced oils and drawings. British landscape subjects—particularly rural English scenes painted during his annual London visits—form a distinct segment of his output. Works are typically modest in scale, consistent with the watercolor medium, and often feature atmospheric effects, warm Mediterranean light, and architectural detail.

Market and appraisal context

Carlandi's watercolors of Roman landmarks, the Campagna, and British rural scenes appear regularly at auction in Italy and the United Kingdom. Value depends on subject (iconic Roman views tend to be more sought after), medium, condition, provenance, and date. Works on paper require careful condition assessment, as foxing and fading are common. Attribution should be verified against his characteristic loose, luminous watercolor handling, since several Italian watercolorists of the period worked in similar topographical traditions. Collectors should consult recent comparable auction results for current market benchmarks.

Auction categories and appraisal factors

Common auction categories

  • Old Master & 19th Century Paintings
  • Watercolors & Works on Paper

Value drivers

  1. Watercolors of Rome and the Roman Campagna are the most commonly encountered works at auction
  2. Provenance and attribution should be confirmed, as Italian 19th-century watercolorists are sometimes confused with one another in auction cataloguing
  3. Condition is especially important for works on paper; foxing, fading, and mount damage can materially affect value
  4. Subject matter matters: views of well-known Roman landmarks and British scenes may attract different collector audiences

Appraisal caveats

  • No specific auction records were available in the source pack; comparable sales should be checked in dedicated auction databases for current market estimates.
  • Carlandi is not widely documented in major museum collections outside Italy, which may limit the depth of provenance research available to appraisers.
