Maurice Cockrill (1936–2013) was a British painter, teacher, and poet born in Hartlepool, County Durham. After taking evening painting classes, he studied full-time at Denbigh Technical College and attended the University of Reading in 1963–1964. His teaching career included Liverpool College of Art and Liverpool Polytechnic, and his work became closely connected with Liverpool's postwar artistic community. Paintings from that context employed Pop and Photo-Realist approaches, while his later practice moved toward a more emotionally charged Romantic Expressionism. Cockrill exhibited in Liverpool and London, received a retrospective at the Walker Art Gallery in 1995, and was elected a Royal Academician in 1999.
