About Josef Dobrowsky
Josef Dobrowsky (1889–1964) was an Austrian painter, draftsman, and graphic artist known for his work in oil, pastel, watercolor, and gouache. Born Josef Karl Felix Dobrowsky, he trained between 1906 and 1919 and later taught at the Meisterklasse für Malerei in Vienna, where his students included Erich Brauer. Dobrowsky was a member of the Zinkerbacher Artist Colony, a group of artists who lived and worked together at Lake Wolfgang in Upper Austria until the colony disbanded following the Anschluss in 1938. His career spanned nearly six decades, from 1906 until his death in 1964. The RKD holds over 370 records of works attributed to him, reflecting a substantial and varied output across painting and works on paper.

Common works and media
Dobrowsky worked across a broad range of media. Oil paintings on canvas or board form a significant portion of his output. He also produced pastels, watercolors, gouaches, and graphic works including drawings and prints. Collectors may encounter landscapes, portraits, and figurative compositions, with landscape subjects associated with his Lake Wolfgang period being particularly recognizable. His works on paper are more frequently available at auction than larger canvases.
Market and appraisal context
Josef Dobrowsky's works appear at auction primarily as European paintings and works on paper. Oil paintings generally command stronger prices than works in pastel, watercolor, or gouache, though individual results vary widely with size, subject, condition, and provenance. Pieces with documented provenance linking to the Zinkerbacher Artist Colony period or to his academic career may attract additional collector interest. Appraisals should consider comparable public auction results, exhibition history, and the medium and date of the specific work. No catalogue raisonné was identified in available sources, so attribution should be verified through expert review or published scholarship.
