Henri Gaudier-Brzeska (1891–1915) was a French sculptor, draughtsman, printmaker, and painter whose brief career unfolded largely in London. Born near Orléans, he began making sculpture in Paris without formal training and moved to London with Sophie Brzeska in 1911. There he entered the avant-garde circle around Wyndham Lewis and exhibited in a Vorticist context. His sculpture developed rapidly from modeled forms toward direct carving, simplified masses, and a forceful modernist language. Although French by birth and identity, his activity in England gives him a prominent place in accounts of early British modernism. Collectors encounter sculpture, drawings, prints, paintings, and other works on paper, including distinctive animal studies. His career ended when he was killed in action while serving in the French army in 1915, at age twenty-three.
