About Edward McKnight Kauffer
Edward McKnight Kauffer (1890–1954) was an American graphic designer and poster artist whose career bridged fine art and commercial design. Born in Great Falls, Montana, he trained at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art in San Francisco and in Paris before settling in London in 1914. There he became one of the twentieth century's most influential poster designers, applying modernist visual principles to public advertising and becoming closely associated with the golden age of British poster art. Alongside his celebrated poster work, Kauffer was active as a painter, book illustrator, book jacket designer, theatre designer, and muralist. He lived in London for over two decades — much of that time with textile designer Marion Dorn — before returning to New York in 1940. His work is represented in major museum collections worldwide.

Common works and media
Collectors and appraisers most frequently encounter Kauffer's work in the form of lithographic posters, screen prints, and other graphic works on paper. Original poster designs for British transportation and commercial clients represent his best-known output. Also seen at auction are book jackets and cover illustrations, gouache or watercolor preparatory designs, paintings, and theatre set designs. Works may be signed with any of several variants of his name, including 'E. McKnight Kauffer,' 'EMKK,' or 'Ted Kauffer,' as documented by the Library of Congress and RKD.
Market and appraisal context
Edward McKnight Kauffer has a well-established and liquid auction market spanning over two decades, with 383 total lots recorded and 265 carrying realized prices. Auction activity spans from May 2002 through May 2026, with consistent year-over-year volume (18 lots in both the trailing and prior 12-month windows). Ten named auction houses have handled his material, including Christie's, Sotheby's, Bonhams, Swann Auction Galleries, and Poster Auctions International — a strong signal of broad institutional and specialist demand. Price dispersion is wide: the recorded range runs from $50 to $34,000, with a median of $812 and a 75th percentile of $2,000. The market is anchored by his London-period poster designs (1914–1940), especially Underground and Imperial Airways commissions, which command the highest prices. New York–period travel posters (American Airlines, Pan American) and book illustrations (such as the Nonesuch Don Quixote) trade at more moderate levels. Gouache maquettes and preparatory works are relatively scarce at auction and tend to outperform printed multiples of similar date.
