Artist context

About Dick Elffers

Dick Elffers (1910–1990), born Dirk Cornelis Elffers in Rotterdam, was a Dutch graphic designer, painter, sculptor, photographer, and monumental artist whose practice spanned an exceptionally broad range of media. Active from the 1930s through the 1980s, he produced graphic prints, paintings, mosaics, stained-glass windows, ceramic works, textile designs, wall paintings, and photographs. He is recognized by the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie (RKD) as both a graphic artist and a monumental artist, and his work is held in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Elffers married the Dutch photographer Emmy Andriesse and was based in Amsterdam later in life. Collectors most often encounter his graphic works, illustrations, and prints on the secondary market, though his architectural commissions in stained glass and mosaic remain part of the Dutch built environment.

Common works and media

Collectors are most likely to encounter Dick Elffers's graphic prints and illustrations, including posters and book designs. Other works appearing at auction include paintings on canvas and panel, ink and pencil drawings, photographs, small-scale sculptures, and ceramic pieces. Monumental commissions in mosaic, stained glass, and wall painting exist in Dutch public and ecclesiastical buildings but are not portable for resale.

Market and appraisal context

Dick Elffers's wide-ranging output means collectors may encounter prints, drawings, photographs, paintings, and ceramic pieces at auction. Graphic works and prints appear most frequently. Valuation depends on medium, date, condition, provenance, and whether a work bears his signature or distinctive 'E' monogram. Architectural commissions such as mosaics and stained glass are site-specific and do not trade on the open market. His institutional representation at MoMA supports long-term collector interest. Comparable auction records should be consulted for individual pricing context.

Auction categories and appraisal factors

Value drivers

  1. Medium and technique: Elffers worked across an unusually wide range including graphic prints, mosaics, stained glass, ceramics, paintings, and textiles, each with distinct valuation profiles.
  2. Provenance and attribution: works signed 'dick Elffers' or monogrammed 'E' per RKD; unsigned pieces require attribution verification.
  3. Monumental vs. portable works: Elffers produced wall paintings, mosaics, and stained glass for architectural commissions, which are fixed installations; only portable works (prints, paintings, drawings, photographs, ceramics) typically appear at auction.
  4. Institutional holdings: works represented in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (New York), supporting collector recognition.

Appraisal caveats

  • No specific movement or school affiliation is recorded in the available authority sources; collectors should not assume association with a named Dutch art movement without further provenance research.
  • Market pricing data was not available from major auction-house sources in this source pack; comparable sale research is recommended for individual appraisal.
