Record every mark before researching
Photograph the front, back, shoulder, heel, base, embossing, city name, date code, manufacturer mark, seams, and lip. Small differences can separate common bottles from better examples.
Measure height and note glass color, label condition, case wear, chips, bruises, cracks, staining, and repairs.
Condition is not cosmetic only
Bottle collectors care about chips, bruising, cracks, haze, scratches, label loss, repainting, and cleaning damage. Do not tumble-clean or repaint before value review.
Original caps, crates, carriers, and local provenance can add context, but they should be documented separately.
Use comparable bottles carefully
Compare the same bottle type, city, date range, color, and condition. A rare variant does not set the value for a common bottle that only looks similar.
For a formal appraisal, specify whether you need insurance replacement, fair market value, or sale planning guidance.
