## About Theodor van Thulden

Theodor van Thulden (1606–1669) was a Flemish painter, draughtsman, and engraver active in the Southern Netherlands during the 17th century. Born in 's-Hertogenbosch in the Duchy of Brabant and baptized there on August 9, 1606, he trained and established his career in Antwerp, a leading center of Baroque artistic production. His 1635 marriage to Maria van Balen—daughter of painter Hendrick van Balen I and godchild of Peter Paul Rubens—placed him firmly within the network of Antwerp's most prominent artistic families. Van Thulden is best known for altarpieces, mythological scenes, allegorical compositions, and portraits. He also produced a substantial body of prints and drawings, sometimes marked with the monogram TVT. Over the course of his career he worked in Antwerp, Paris, and his native 's-Hertogenbosch, where he was buried on July 12, 1669.

## Common works and media

Van Thulden worked across several media. His painted output includes altarpieces for churches, mythological and allegorical canvases, and portraits of civic and ecclesiastical patrons. As a printmaker he produced engravings after his own designs and those of contemporaries, including Rubens. Drawings in pen, ink, and chalk survive in museum and private collections. The formats most likely to appear in appraisal contexts are oil paintings on panel and canvas, engraved prints, etchings, and preparatory drawings. Common subjects include episodes from classical mythology, allegorical figures, religious narratives, and formal portraits.

## Market and appraisal context

Van Thulden's works appear at auction primarily as Old Master paintings, drawings, and prints. Key valuation factors include attribution certainty, the distinction between original compositions and workshop or follower versions, medium (oil on panel or canvas versus works on paper), condition, provenance, and subject matter. His mythological and allegorical paintings tend to attract stronger collector interest. As an artist connected to Rubens' circle, his oeuvre sometimes overlaps in attribution debates with other Antwerp masters, making scholarly opinion important for appraisal. Prints and drawings by van Thulden are encountered more frequently at auction than major oil paintings, which remain relatively rare.
