## About Tazio Secchiaroli

Tazio Secchiaroli (1925–1998) was an Italian photographer widely regarded as one of the original paparazzi. Born and based in Rome, he began his career as a street photographer in the aftermath of World War II before joining the V.E.D.O. agency and training under Adolfo Porry Pastorel, a pioneer of Italian photojournalism. In 1955 Secchiaroli founded the Roma Press Photo agency, covering politics and celebrity news. His candid photographs of the nightlife along Rome's Via Veneto — including the infamous Aiché Nana incident at the Rugantino club and the public quarrels of Anita Ekberg and Anthony Steel — made him internationally famous in 1958. Federico Fellini drew directly on Secchiaroli's exploits to create the Paparazzo character in La Dolce Vita (1960). That same year Secchiaroli left paparazzi work behind and reinvented himself as a cinema set photographer, a field he helped define, working closely with major Italian directors and serving as Sophia Loren's personal photographer for two decades until his retirement in 1985.
