## About Michel Fingesten

Michel Fingesten (1884–1943) was an Austrian-born painter, graphic artist, and illustrator widely regarded as one of the most original and prolific bookplate designers of the twentieth century. Born in Buczkowice in Austrian Silesia (present-day Poland) to a Jewish family, Fingesten traveled extensively across Europe before settling in Italy. He worked across oil painting, watercolor, gouache, drawing, and printmaking, but it is his etchings and ex libris designs that brought him lasting recognition. Italian critic Giampiero Mughini compared Fingesten's significance to the ex libris tradition as comparable to Picasso's impact on painting. He died in Cerisano, Italy, in 1943.
