## About Massimo Campigli

Massimo Campigli (1895–1971) was an Italian painter, journalist, and graphic artist born in Berlin. He trained as a journalist in Milan, where he encountered Futurist circles, and later lived in Paris from 1919 to 1933. His early work reflects engagement with Cubism and the influence of Fernand Léger and Pablo Picasso. A visit to Rome and an encounter with Etruscan art in 1928 prompted a major stylistic shift: Campigli developed flattened, two-dimensional figures with an archaic and hieratic character. Women and groups of female figures became recurring subjects, while his practice also included graphic art, lithography, and large-scale murals. During the 1930s he received mural commissions in Geneva, Milan, and Padua. His paintings, works on paper, prints, and murals appear in public collections and auction records, giving collectors several different contexts in which to encounter his work.
