## About Lucas Kilian

Lucas Kilian (1579–1637) was a German engraver, etcher, printmaker, and painter active in Augsburg during the early Baroque period. Born into the prominent Kilian family of engravers, he was the son of Bartholomäus Kilian and became a central figure in the Custos workshop after his stepfather, Dominicus Custos, married his widowed mother. Kilian produced finely detailed portraits of contemporary nobility, clergy, and civic figures, as well as mythological compositions and scientifically significant anatomical plates. His engravings reflect the high technical standards of Augsburg's printmaking tradition and were widely distributed across Europe. The Kilian-Custos workshop was one of the most productive print publishers in southern Germany, and Lucas's contributions helped sustain its reputation through the early decades of the seventeenth century.

## Common works and media

Collectors most commonly encounter Lucas Kilian through copperplate engravings and etchings on paper. Typical subjects include portrait busts of European nobility, clergy, and scholars; mythological and allegorical scenes; and detailed anatomical illustrations produced for scientific publications. His prints range from small-format portrait medallions to larger multi-figure compositions. Original impressions from the early 1600s on laid paper are standard; later re-strikes and copies exist and should be distinguished from lifetime impressions.

## Market and appraisal context

Lucas Kilian's works appear primarily in the Old Master Prints and Works on Paper categories at auction. His engravings of portraits and anatomical subjects are the most frequently encountered pieces. Valuation depends on condition, impression quality, subject matter, and whether the work can be firmly attributed to Lucas rather than another member of the extended Kilian-Custos workshop. Anatomical plates and portrait engravings of historically significant sitters tend to attract stronger collector interest. Because the workshop produced many similar plates collaboratively, attribution can be uncertain and should be assessed carefully.
