Lorna Simpson (born 1960, Brooklyn, New York) is an American photographer and multimedia artist whose career spans more than four decades. She came to wide attention in the 1980s and 1990s for photo-text installations such as Guarded Conditions and Square Deal, which combined black-and-white imagery with fragmented language to question how identity, gender, race, and history are constructed and represented. In 1990 she was among the first African-American women to exhibit at the Venice Biennale. Over time her practice expanded into painting, collage, sculpture, film, and video, while continuing to probe memory and archival imagery. Simpson holds a BFA (1982) and MFA (1985) and is represented in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Tate, and other major institutions. She lives and works in Brooklyn.
