## About Lorna Simpson

Lorna Simpson (born 1960, Brooklyn, New York) is an American photographer and multimedia artist whose career spans more than four decades. She came to wide attention in the 1980s and 1990s for photo-text installations such as Guarded Conditions and Square Deal, which combined black-and-white imagery with fragmented language to question how identity, gender, race, and history are constructed and represented. In 1990 she was among the first African-American women to exhibit at the Venice Biennale. Over time her practice expanded into painting, collage, sculpture, film, and video, while continuing to probe memory and archival imagery. Simpson holds a BFA (1982) and MFA (1985) and is represented in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Tate, and other major institutions. She lives and works in Brooklyn.

## Common works and media

Simpson's output includes gelatin silver and chromogenic photographic prints, often paired with text panels; large-scale paintings; sculptural objects; collage and mixed-media works on paper and felt; and film and video installations. Her photographic works from the 1980s and 1990s are the most frequently encountered at auction. More recent paintings, collages, and felt-and-newsprint constructions have also entered the secondary market.

## Market and appraisal context

Lorna Simpson's work appears across Contemporary Art, Photographs, and Post-War and Contemporary Art sale categories at major auction houses. Her early photo-text pieces from the 1980s and 1990s are considered historically important and are held by leading museums, which supports collector confidence. Value depends on medium, scale, date, provenance, and whether the work is a unique piece or an editioned photograph. Later paintings, collages, and sculptures have broadened her market presence. Provenance and exhibition history are key appraisal factors; collectors should verify edition details for photographic works.
