## About John Seymour Lucas

John Seymour Lucas (1849–1923) was a British painter and illustrator best known for historical genre scenes and society portraits from the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. Born in London into an artistic family, he initially trained as a woodcarver before turning to painting, studying at St. Martin's Lane Art School and the Royal Academy Schools. Extensive travels through Holland and Spain exposed him to the Flemish and Spanish Old Masters, whose influence shaped his richly detailed historical compositions. Lucas began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1872, was elected an Associate in 1886, and became a full Royal Academician around 1898–1899. Beyond painting, he designed theatrical costumes and served as an examiner for the Science and Art Department at the South Kensington Museum (later the V&A) from 1895 until 1921. He married French artist Marie Cornelissen in 1877. His cousin John Templeton Lucas was also a painter.
