## About Axel Olson

Axel Olson (1899–1986), born Karl Axel Bernhard Olson, was a Swedish painter, draughtsman and graphic artist associated with Halmstadsgruppen. Born and deceased in Halmstad, he grew up in a seafaring family and began studying drawing through evening classes at a technical school. In 1915 he helped form the Gnistan group with relatives. Travel to Italy and Germany followed in 1922, and in 1923 he moved to Berlin, where he studied with Alexander Archipenko. After returning to Sweden, Olson taught painting and supported himself partly through portrait commissions. He joined Halmstadsgruppen in 1929, placing his work within a distinctive Swedish artist circle. Later trips to Paris and Provence extended his European experience.
