      "title": "An Art Moderne onyx bracelet, circa 1935 Of bi-coloured design, the rectangular onyx plaques set between engraved spacers, maker's mark SF, Austrian assay mark, length 19.0cm In 1929 a group of disillusioned decorative artists, including jewellers and architects, founded the Union des artistes modernes in France. The group's ethos was a reaction against the established style of the time. The copious excess of the 1920s led to the development of a style focused more on artistic rather than intrinsic value. The Union proclaimed, \"We must rise up against everything that looks rich, against whatever is well made, and against anything inherited from grandmother...impose will where habit is not invoked...overcome the habit of the eyes.\" Designs frequently incorporated less expensive metals such as lower carat golds, silver, brass or even chrome and the use of semi-precious over precious stones was preferred. The style became much flatter and starker with a theme of industry and mechanism being apparent.",
